Home Tours Gallery Contact About Us Links FAQ FAQ How to find us Mildura is situated on the Murrary River, and is just to the South of the Victoria/NSW border. Getting to Mildura is easy. As well as arriving by car, bus or train, there are numerous scheduled flights into Mildura airport. Detailed information about how to get here is found at: www.visitmildura.com.au/travellers-tips.html This website also has lots of information about what to do in the Mildura region, including the wineries, the restaurants, the hotels and the great Murray River. Walking distances and grades The Willandra terrain is flat or undulating and easy for walking. We walk a maximum of 9km in one day and we go at a leisurely pace and stop often for breaks, lunch, views, questions and as opportunities arise to look more closely at our landscape, animals and plant life. Approximate distances are as follows: Day 2: 9 km Day 3: 6.5 km Day 4: 7km Day 5: 4km. Weather The Willandra Lakes is a semi-arid desert area and is thus a place of extreme temperatures. The best months to visit are between March and October, when it is warm in the daytime and cool at night. In June it can drop to freezing at night time, although the average night time temperature is 5 degrees. Clothing Because of the extreme temperatures we advise bringing a range of clothing. In the day time, we suggest cotton long sleeve shirts or T shirts, cotton trousers, an extra layer, a sun hat, sun glasses and high factor sun screen. For the evenings bring clothing which can keep you warm if the temperatures get low. A good fleece or puffa jacket and a woolly hat is ideal for cooller evenings around the camp fire, and for watching the sunrise. Please also bring a good waterproof, in case we are lucky enough to have some rain. What kind of footwear should I bring? Bring good comfortable walking shoes/boots for the day time and comfy soft shoes for the night time. What else should I bring? You will need a day pack to carry your camera and other essentials, as well as a 2 litre water bottle, and your extra layer of clothing. Bring a torch for exploring the dunes at night. There is no electricity so remember to bring back up batteries for all your electrical stuff. There is no mobile reception in the Willandra Lakes World Heritage Area. Bring your own sleeping bag or hire one from us - you can hire a torch too! What do I carry? During the day you will be carrying your 2L water bottle and any essentials such as cameras and sunblock in your day-pack. We will carry all the food. Luggage To save on haulage, please only bring a single piece of luggage - a sausage bag or rucksack is ideal. Washing All cabins at Mungo Lodge have ensuite facilities. Bush camp washing facilities are dependent on water supply, but a basin of hot water every day for washing is guaranteed, and there will almost certainly be at least one hot shower per person during the tour. Camping The camp is set up for your arrival and comprises roomy one and two person tents with large porch areas. We have camp beds with pillows, and tents also come with lanterns. Please bring 3 season sleeping bags (or hire ours) and we suggest also using silk sleeping bag liners. You may also choose to go bush and sleep under the desert star canopy. 4WD Support The tour is supported by at least one 4WD vehicle and trailer. This carries the luggage, tents and equipment. Food We provide healthy food tailored to your needs. We aim to source as much food as possible from local producers, in a region which excels in market gardenning, citrus and delicious meats such as local salt-bush lamb. Food is prepared in the camp kitchen, either over the open fire or in camp ovens. Fresh 'damper' bread is made daily. Sample menus are available on request. Please make sure you tell us any of your food requirements on your booking form. | ||||
